| Obamacare, formally called the Affordable Care Act (ACA), is a United States federal statute which enjoys a wide range of social impact and becomes a controversial issue since it was signed into law by President Barack Obama on March 23,2010.This report, divided into three parts, is based on translating materials of Obamacare in whitehouse.gov, which gives a detailed description of the whole process and analyzes the relevant translation methods.The first part gives the general introduction to the report. The body of the report is divided to three chapters, the background information and characteristics of the source text are introduced in the first chapter; the following chapter elaborates each steps of the translation process ranging from preparations to target text revision; the major part of the report is case analysis. The cases are analyzed respectively to discuss how to translate culture-loaded words and how to match the translation with different styles. To express the dual-meaning carried by the culture-loaded words, transplanting and free translation are adopted here. And different translation methods are applied to translate different styles. The last part summarizes the whole translation process as conclusion on the basis of case analysis.Under the guidance of functional equivalence theory proposed by Eugene Nida, American linguist and translator, the report aims to achieve the original text and translated text equivalence in semantic, stylistic and cultural aspects.To sum up, translation is a dynamic process in which the translated texts should be deliberated repeatedly to express the original meaning in the source texts as close as possible. Whoever has a good command of translation both in theory and practice can offer a satisfactory translation. |
