A Report On The Translation Of Military English

Military English is a language for special purpose, which is an important part of the English translation. Not only the research of military English translation contributes to the translation career, but the translation achievements also can provide helps for the development of military fields. When we translate military English into Chinese, we should clarify the logic and language feature of the translation, accurately select professional vocabularies, pay attention to the military language habits, express the meaning of the original text accurately and smoothly. At the same time, military English belongs to the special field, which has its own language and text features, we can’t mix the military English translation with the general English text translation. This paper selects the research report Air Base Attacks and Defensive Counters—Historical Lessons and Future Challenges from the military think-tank (RAND Corporation) of the United States for translation practice. The subject of this report belongs to the military field, which is of strong professionalism. It needs some basic knowledge of military fields, such as the language and cultural backgrounds. Secondly, the report uses many military specialized vocabularies, so it will be difficult to grasp the meaning of these military words accurately. In addition, military terms in this report have certain professional characteristics:the text style is succinct and there is no literary flavor or rhetoric.This paper consists of five parts:introduction, task description, process description, case analysis and conclusion. The translator conducts this translation practice under the guidance of the functionalist approach, shows the translation process of each part. The translator solves the problems when faced during this translation. This report gathers instructive experience for military English translation, especially in the case analysis part.
