Human need poetic living while reality needs to be described poetically in documentary. It doesn’t obey the principle that documentary should be real but can expand the possibility of documentary’s expression. The combination of emptiness and reality can make the scene language more poetic.The documentary "Forty Years’Conversation" contains three layers of emptiness and reality. On the layer of content, what happens in nowadays is "reality" while the history is "emptiness"; on the layer of emotion, the quality and figure of Ou Xingtian is "reality" while the emotion and the conversation between Ou Xingtian and his comrade in arms is "emptiness"; on the layer of scene, the scene of nowadays’ life is "reality" while the scene of history is "emptiness". This kind of emptiness is not the disrespect of fact, but a way to process fact. Only having emptiness and indeterminacy can make artistic work better. For this documentary, the emptiness of history and space and the emptiness of emotion needs audience to fill in their feelings to complete the whole documentary. The emptiness of scene means the emptiness in composition and the emptiness beyond the scene. The emptiness of editing is to justify the rhythm based on the content of the documentary using lots of scenery shots and the shot for both ideographic expression and narrative expression.The combination of emptiness and reality not only means the emptiness and reality of the content, but most importantly means make the emptiness and reality to integrate and supplement each other. The form of visualized political comment should be abandoned to present the characteristic more poetically. This combination is not only for constructing the relationship of history and present and the relationship of emotion and subjective, but also for presenting the life more poetically.
