Piano has been developing in China for more than 100 years. From the simple practice at the beginning to the prosperity and diversification at present, the musical works for piano in China are advancing to maturation. As China’s economy and technology are rapidly developing, interpenetration is taking place between western music and traditional Chinese music. The difficulty with music composing, especially for piano works, is to combine the characteristics of the two kinds of music. There is no lack of great composers recently in China, and there is a great quantity of works that are outstanding. Huang Anlun is among those greatest composers such as He Lvting and Chu Wanghua. This thesis is divided into three chapters. Chapter one introduces Huang Anlun and the style of his works. As the style of an artist is influenced by his life and humanistic environment, the learning and social environment of Huang is certainly indispensable for his achievement. Chapter two introduces the composing features of Huang’s two preludes. The analysis includes composing techniques, and music structure. Through the analysis of the two preludes, the writer annotates Huang’s composing features and a series of composing techniques. Chapter three introduces the playing techniques and the practice method of the two works, focusing on analysing difficult techniques. This thesis, combined with the writer’s understanding of the two namesake preludes, respectively in major and minor keys, and their playing techniques and composing features, discusses the techniques and methods for playing the works.
