A Study On Koryo Envoys To Jin Dynasty

Most of the research on the relationship between Koryo and Jin Dynasty focuses on the sort out their relationship,and occasionally refers to the trade,diplomatic system and protocol.However,there is no further research on the envoy issue. Through analysing History of Koryo,Historyof Jin, Newly Compiled Korean Geography Records, and some dates of Korean stonecuttings such as Korea integrated epitaph, this paper has observed the issue that Koryo sent envoys to Jin Dynasty.Importantly,focuses on the envoys sent to Jin Dynasty by Koryo.Except for introduction,this paper consists of four chapters.Chapter one is about the estabilishment and development of the tributary relationship between Koryo and Jin Dynasty.This chapter observes the earlier stage of the periods during which Koryo sent envoys to Jin Dynasty(1116-1169), and mainly related to several of the important events of this period when bilateral exchangessuch as The issue of Baozhou, The render tribute to the conqueror, Into the sworn statement and so on.In addition,this chapter makes a statistical analysis on the general situation of envoys themselves and timesincluding General emissary and Unconventional emissary in the earlier stage,and makes a conclusion that the types of General emissary are as follows,he zhengdan, he shengchen, xie heshengchen, jin fangwu, xie hengci(xie hengxuan).Among them,he zhengdan, he shengchen, xie heshengchen were the termly dispatch after 1126, and the jin fangwu, xie hengci(xie hengxuan)were sent after Koryo into the sworn statement to Jin Dynasty in 1142 and the estabilishment of the tributary relationship between Koryo and Jin Dynasty.The ending sums up the characteristics of the earlier stage of the period during which Koryo sent to Jin Dynasty.Chapter two is about emissary Koryo military regime period. This chapter observes the later stage of the periods during which Koryo sent envoys to JinDynasty(1170-1213),and mainly refers to some important events in this period such as Military retainercoup and King Myeongjong request the canonization, Zhao weichong’s rebellion, the fake jade event, Cui zhongxian’s rebellion and so on.The next is about the general situation of the later stage,including countting the times of sentenvoys, andthe statistics and analysis of General emissary and Unconventional emissary.This chapter downs a conclusion that the times of termly dispatch in this period has been fastened, he zhengdan, he shengchen, xie heshengchen, jin fangwu this four were sent once a year, and the xie hengci(xie hengxuan) was once in three years. The ending sums up the characteristics of the later stage of the periods during which Koryo sent envoys to Jin Dynasty, and mainly discussedinstitutionalization issue of sent envoys in this period.Chapter three is about the study of the envoys sent to Jin Dynasty.This chapter focuses on the envoys sent to Jin Dynasty,and discusses deeply about the envoys’ class origin mainly based on thestonecuttings and biographies,which refers to the envoys’ nativeplaces,family backgrounds,ways to become officials an so on,and analyses the characteristic of the distribution of the envoys’ native places based on the statistics of the envoys’ native places,and makes a deep analysis on the characteristic of the distribution of the envoys’ native places from the aspects such as regional economic,regional culture and education, population distribution and so on.The ending analyses and sums up the standard of selecting envoys to Jin Dynasty based on the envoys’ native places,family backgrounds,ways to become officials and so on.The conclusion makes a comment on the envoys sent by Koryo to Jin Dynasty from the perspective of Jin Dynasty and Koryo.
