With the progress of modern technology and the development of culture and art, poetry is constantly seeking and innovating new ways of expression in form in order to represent the developed semantic content. These poems with experimental features explore the poetic expressing devices through the linguistic and non linguistic symbols. In experimental poetic texts, paralinguistic symbols which strengthen the conventional phonetic and literal expressing devices enrich the expression forms of poetic texts. Experimental poetic texts make comprehensive use of extremely compressed texts, broken words, or even single letters, punctuation, capitalization and de-capitalization; long sentences in experimental poetic texts are broken down into sentence fragments by line arrangement so that readers’ conventional reading mode will be changed; combining with auxiliary means, such as unique printing, font, size or text color and pictures, experimental poetic texts resort to visual sense and auditory sense for representing and deepening the connotations of poems so as to form their own distinct styles. Admittedly, these paralinguistic symbols play a key role in the formation of style. Compared with traditional poetic texts, experimental poetic texts possess a strong visual effect and even render readers the intersensory experience, as well as changing readers’ traditional aesthetic psychology and appreciation convention. Therefore, it is apparent that experimental poetic texts are of significant stylistic and aesthetic value.Based on choice theory, deviation theory and foregrounding theory, the paper analyzes numerous representative examples of experimental poetic texts with paralinguistic symbols, trying to dig out the semantic meaning of the paralinguistic symbols in the poetic text from the perspective of the relationship between form and content, and attempting to analyze how the artistic effects of different poetic styles are realized through the paralinguistic expressing devices. Furthermore, the paper describes and illustrates the positive role of multifarious style forming-elements in the construction of style in experimental poetic texts. Here are the findings: the style-forming elements of experimental poetic texts are achieved by the full use of paralinguistic symbols, that is to say, the choice, deviation and foregrounding which are realized by paralinguistic symbols constitute the style-forming elements of experimental poetic texts, and endow the meanings of poems with a certain degree of openness. The wide semantic space of experimental poems remains to be explored. The thesis is of great significance because it demonstrates that paralinguistic symbols are the style forming elements of experimental poetic texts, and it explores the connection between the use of paralinguistic symbols and poets’ philosophical thinking, hoping to deepen reader’s understanding of the style of experimental poetic texts if possible.
