The thesis consists of a translation and a commentary of The Canton, Ohio speech by Eugene V. Debs. The speech was delivered against the First World War to 1,200 people at the Ohio state convention of the Socialist Party on June 16,1918. The speech not only promoted the socialist movement home and abroad, but also educated and encouraged the whole working class. This thesis will discuss the political speech translation under the "Function plus Loyalty" theory by using examples from the translation. In this commentary, by studying the "Function plus Loyalty" theory which can be regarded as guidance for political speech translation, I firstly introduce the "Function plus Loyalty" theory and the way to realize translation’s "function" and "loyalty". The key part of this commentary is to summarize the methods of political speech translation under the "Function plus Loyalty" theory, with my own translating experience, from the aspects of realization of translation’s purpose and loyalty.
