Interpreting Of Chinese Four-character Phrase In Press Conference From The Perspective Of Interpretive Theory

Since the beginning of reform and opening up in late 1970s, exchanges in economic and political fields between China and rest of the world have increased dramatically. Interpreting, serving as a bridge to facilitate those exchanges, plays an increasingly important role in the process. Interpreting has become an indispensible factor when it comes to press conference.With colorful expression and rich meaningfulness, four-character phrase is usually preferred and employed by speakers in press conference. However, due to different language features and culture backgrounds, it poses a great challenge to interpreters in four-character phrase interpreting.Previous scholars mainly centered on interpreting practice of four-character phrases, and rarely took theoretical foundation into consideration. This thesis makes effort to explore some strategies and skills of interpreting four-character phrases in press conference from the perspective of Interpretive Theory.The thesis begins with a brief introduction of interpreting, interpretive theory, and four-character phrase in press conference. Then based on the interpretive theory, from the perspective of culture and linguistics, some strategies for four-character phrase interpreting are proposed. In press conference, interpreting of four-character phrases mainly focuses on the sense, which is produced in the process of deverbalization. And interpreting actually is to pursue sense equivalence, rather than language correspondence. Though linguistic form stays in secondary position, it never means linguistic correspondence is not important. It should be said that based on sense equivalence, interpreting should pursue language correspondence as much as possible. In order to achieve sense equivalence basically, and language correspondence as much as possible, interpreters usually adopt the strategies of domestication and foreignization when cultural factor incurred, and literal translation and free translation when language element considered. In practice, to achieve domestication and foreignization, images covered in four-character phrases would usually be implicated when it pose an obstacle to understanding for English-speaking listeners.And rhythm of four-character phrases would also be inevitably destroyed in interpreting so as to achieve an effect which is familiar with English language. In addition, some logical relations hidden in four-character phrases should necessarily be explicated, according to English expression. As for linguistics aspect, literal translation could be realized in a small number cases, while free translation is the skill usually adopted by interpreters. Free translation could be reached by way of omitting some factors, explaining in details and generalizing.Generally, the thesis has achieved the following findings. From the perspective of culture, domestication and foreignization could be achieved by explicating and implicating some components and logical relations. And from the perspective of linguistics, literal translation and free translation could be employed to interpret four-character phrases by some skills, such as borrowing, omission, explanation and generalization.
