The development of urban guild system is the prominent feature of modern city in the modernization process. Since the rise of human civilization, the symbol of urban guild starts to appear, provides directive functions for people’s lives, beautifies municipal environment, and sets up orderly city life. With the continuous extension of modern city size and the increasing of population, complicated city transportation needs more rational and orderly urban guide for practical ends. Therefore, the urban construction should more emphasis on functionality and aesthetics, and it is imperative to construct rational and orderly city. In terms of this, the design of rational and orderly urban guild system becomes the character of modern urban civilization. By studying several aspects of guide system design in urban construction planning, such as functionality, aesthetics, and etc., it could be observed that the rationalism-based design of urban guide system is able to provide normative order and convenience for aesthetics and transportation in a complicated modern city. From the above, it is recognized that rationalized and orderly designs are the ambition pursued by Chinese urban guild system. This text will set Shanghai as an example to investigate the modernization of urban guild system in China. Via studying the development history and features of city guild system in China and comparing with those in the West, the development tendency and rules necessary to obey of Chinese city guild system in future are discussed.
