As one of the most famous composers in the contemporary world, George Rochberg creates a large number of high-quality works in his life. In the meanwhile, George Rochberg is one of the most prolific composers in the 20 th century. With various forms of creation, his music contains many forms of genres including indoor ensemble, string quartet, symphony, song, solo song and opera. George Rochberg not only enjoys an extremely high status in American music industry, but also develops a school of his own, makes many achievements and exerts a far-reaching influence among many composers of the 20 th century. With ingenious ideas, his works have a variety of styles and usually adopt one or several styles and composition techniques, among which tonal, twelve-tone and collage composition techniques are involved in his musical creation.Music for the Magic Theater is one of important representative works of George Rochberg, in which “collage” technique is a main creation technique. This paper takes Music for the Magic Theater as the research object, mainly analyzes and studies the creation concept, material source, reference method and concrete type of “collage” technique and probes into the uniqueness of George Rochberg in applying “collage” technique in his Music for the Magic Theater and artistic beauty brought by the application of “collage” technique.The research of this paper is divided into four parts.:Chapter one mainly gives a brief introduction of George Rochberg, creation background of his Music for the Magic Theater, creative characteristic of this work and some very important music marks in the work.Chapter two expounds the thought content expressed by Music for the Magic Theater, hopes to achieve the goal of deeply learning about the creation intention and the creation concept of the composer while introducing western “collage” technique of the 20 th century.Chapter three and four mainly conducts an in-depth analysis and study on the source and structure arrangement of “collage” materials and the concrete type of “collage” technique and hopes to further learn about the creation technique of “collage” technique in the 20 th century through analyzing and studying the work.The final conclusion makes a further summary of enlightenment brought by the creation concept of the work while summarizing various composition techniques of the work.
