Wang Xinlin is one of the most famous Chinese composers who have the most remarkable abilities in composing and the most profound thoughts in music. His music compositions,especially symphonies, show great music expressive force and deep humanistic connotations of reflection, criticism,endeavor etc. He said: "As a serious art and a representative of the classical and modern international cultural phenomenon,symphony is a very important and profound artistic phenomenon which is as great as architecture, sculpture, literature, and ballet. Symphony has become an important symbol of modern culture and also a symbol of a nation and a country."Three Symphonic Murals —— Legends of the Sea is the symphony work created by Wang Xilin in his mature period of music creation. It seeks the new development of traditional symphony and combines the techniques of western avant-garde composers with Chinese traditional folk cultural ideas and modern music creation techniques, which make the work have a unique artistic effect.Starting from the composing techniques of Three Symphonic Murals — — Legends of the Sea, this paper analyzes the musical form structure, tonality and the non-tonality pitch organization, the rhythm and the orchestration. It also discusses "inheritance" and "innovation" of the work and summarizes the typical techniques of regularity and characteristics of style.The paper is divided into four chapters:The first chapter is introduction, mainly on the symphonicmural three- the legend of the sea of the selected topic basis,meaning, present situation and the main methods of this research.The second chapter is about Wang Xilin life and the overview of his creation, mainly about his personal life and his symphony creation, especially focusing on the creation overview and the analysis of the musical structure of Three Symphonic Murals—— Legends of the Sea.The third chapter is about the analysis of techniques. It is the main part of the thesis, which respectively discusses the tonality and non-tonality pitch organization, the rhythm and the orchestration of Three Symphonic Murals —— Legends of the Sea and their characteristics.The forth chapter summarizes the former parts and discusses the mixture of tradition and modern music. At the same time, this chapter analyzes how the Chinese national music elements blend with modern music creation fully and comprehensively.On one hand WangXilin’s symphonies have inherited the modern composing techniques On the other hand, they combine with the Chinese national music language. The two aspects combine with artistic expression well and appropriately.
