A Study On Qunxue Press Under The Flourished Background Of The Novels In Late Qing

In Late Qing dynasty, the published of translated novels and original novels are unprecedented prosperity.This booming trend not only comes from the transition of literature concept,but also benefited from the development of the printing technology,the promotion of serial of newspapers and the rise of private publishing institutions.Among these factors,the important role that played by private publishing institutions can not be ignored.Founded in Shanghai in 1903 by Shen Jixuan,Qunxue Press was a private publishing agency.Compared with Kaiming Press, Commercial Press,Dianshizhai Press and so on,the size of Qunxue Press is not big. But its published separate edition novel,the literature magazines Monthly Novel as well as the groups of writers and the literary theory that advocated by Qunxue Press are all influential at the time.It is the picture of new novel development and prosperity of the Late Qing dynasty, has important research value and research significance.This paper is divided into two parts.The first part mainly introduces the details of Qunxue Press under the flourished background of the novels in Late Qing, which will be divided into three sections.The first section,the prosperity of the novels in Late Qing.This section discusses the prosperity of novel market,the development of the printing technology and so on,to explore the time and historical background of Qunxue Press.The second section,the creation and the business of Qunxue Press.This section is based on the information which collected from Shen Newspaper,The Times,Dagong Newspaper and one of the four novel magazines that called Monthly Novel in Late Qing.By these first hand information,this paper overview the creation and the business of Qunxue Press and further analysis the novel publishing,the strategy of advertising,the business form of its separate edition,the remuneration system,etc.The third section,the Qunxue Press and the novel writers.Qunxue Press through the regulation of writers and articles formed a particular writer group.Qunxue Press regularly publish these writers’ novels and theories in its own novel magazine, and then complete all the work on editing,printing,publishing,etc. This section start from the writers who are closely linked with Qunxue Press,just as Wu Jianren,Zhou Guisheng,Xu Fumin, explain the relation between the writers and the Qunxue Press as well as the improtant role in promoting the change and development of novels in Late Qing.The second part is the recount of separate edition novel which published and distributed by Qunxue Press in Late Qing.So far,the research about Qunxue Press which play an important role in literary publications in Late Qing are rarely,the general research of its published separate edition novel are even few and few.This recount is mainly based on the information which collected from the Japanese scholar TARUMOTO Teruo’s New Addtions to the Novel Directory in Late Qing and Early Republic, Shanghai library in modern literature document, Beijing Normal University library and so on, arranging the separate edition novels that published by Qunxue Press according to the time order from 1903 to 1911.At the meantime,this part introduce the content of each novel, in order to making effort to make a recount completely about separate edition novel which published and distributed by Qunxue Press in Late Qing.
