Mikhail Pavlovich Shishkin (M(?), is not only a famous contemporary Russian writer, but also the only one who wins all the three major literary awards for writers in Russia. Almost all of his writings touch off heated discussions and different critics, both in Russia and all over the world. Although Pavlovich Shishkin is not a productive writer, his books win awards for many times, among which the novel Pismovnik (in English Letter Book) is granted the first prize of the 2011 Big Book Award. Pismovnik, an epistolary novel starts with a pair of letters written by a couple and discusses some everlasting questions, like love, war, death and family.Different with his other works, Pismovnik has received no negative criticism but high praise. Prior to publication in Russia, Pismovnik had been seen as a major event in the literary world. France, Italy, Sweden and some other countries has translated and published the novel, but there is yet no Chinese translation. The interest of Pismovnik continually increases in the literary field of Russia and even the whole world. However, there are only translations of his previous work sand there is no book-length study of Pismovnik in China. In view of the position of Pavlovich Shishkin and the impact of Pismovnik in the Russian literary world, and also the status quo in China, this thesis tries to interpret the theme of Pismovnik:1.Study the main content of this novel;2. Analyze the themes of this novel;3. Summarize the main themes of the novel, such as love, war, the relations of family, death, etc. There are four chapters apart from the introduction and conclusion. The introduction briefly introduces the main contents of the novel and summarizes the previous researches on this novel in Russia. This part further presents the significance, creativity, aim and task of this thesis. The first chapter analyzes one of the most important themes in Pismovnik-love. Beyond time and space, life and death, love expands into great love in the world-the motion and the true meaning of life. The second chapter focuses on the theme of war. On the one hand, opposite to nature, war destroys lives and culture and brings pain, death, disaster. On the other hand, people grow up in the cruel battle which tells people the meaning of life. The third chapter analyzes the theme of family relationships. In this novel, Shishkin divides the family relationships into specific relationships:one is between husband and wife, and the other is between parents and children, which expressing personal conflicts and reconciliation with others. After accepting death as a gift of life, personal reunderstanding of the meaning of life is reflected in the relationships with others:relationships between husband and wife and between parents and children. Among them, the understanding of and toleration for others are also the performances of reconciliation and love. The fourth chapter analyzes the most important theme of this novel-death. Death is not only the eternal theme that puzzles mankind, but also a frequent topic in Shishkin’s creations. Differently, in this novel,Shishkin does not show the confusion of death and the desire to overcome death, but show the reconciliation with death and deem death a gift of life. Through life experiences, the hero and heroine learns how to accept death calmly and understand the true meaning of death:it teaches people to understand the true meaning of life and to realize the meaning of understanding and tolerantion. As precious as love, death is also a gift. Conclusion makes a brief summarization of the views of the whole thesis and points out the artistic values of Pismovnik.
