Translating Chinese War Metaphors

It is known that war metaphors are widely used in Chinese and English languages. And it is observed that there exist obvious and different preferences on the use of war metaphors in Chinese and English:the frequency of war metaphors used in Chinese is much higher than that used in English. Currently, researches on war metaphor translation, particularly on Chinese war metaphor translations, are rare. Therefore, the author designed three corpora:one is C-E war metaphor parallel corpus, the other two are Chinese war metaphor original corpus and English war metaphor corpus. On the basis of the three self-designed corpora, this thesis aims to analyze the current translation of Chinese war metaphors and finds that war metaphors are over-kept in the English translated text, leading to the misinterpretation of Chinese war metaphors. To solve this problem, the author makes appropriate suggestions from the four aspects, namely, culture, language, context and translator so as to provide help for researches on Chinese war metaphors.
