English logical resultative formulas (ELRF) is of great significance in achieving successful language communication. The present contrastive study is carried out in revealing the semantic prosody features of ELRF used by Chinese English learners and native English speakers. In the first place, the concordance lines are extracted from CROWN, CLOB and CLEC through AntConc. Next, the collocates of each node word are carried out through a detailed observation so as to determine what types of words are to be analyzed for discovering the semantic prosody. Finally, a comparison is made with the data obtained from each corpora to see the semantic features between the two language using groups. It is figured out that Chinese EFL learners display semantic prosodic similarities as well as differences in using ELRF compared with that of the native speakers. The English language learners are inclined to underuse the negative semantic prosody of "due to"; overuse the positive sematic prosody of "thanks to"; misuse the negative semantic prosody of "[bring] about", "[result] in " and "[lead] to ". On the other hand, similar semantic prosodic features exist between the two language using groups, namely "as a result of", "[result] from", "caused by", "because of, "so that", "now that", and "as a result". The reasons behind semantic prosody using contrasts are the transfer of mother language, interference of intra-language, application of communication strategy as well as lack of semantic prosody awareness. The present contrastive study can lead to some practical implications for English language teaching, learning as well as textbook and dictionary compilation. With the help of the corpora technology, as well as the relevant semantic information in the dictionaries, textbooks, learners’semantic awareness can be better cultivated. |
