Research On Vietnam Economy In The French Colonial Period

The French colonists began to grab territory since they invaded Vietnam.With the establishment of colonial rule in Vietnam, the colonial economic system in agriculture to plunder the land as the center gradually formed. In the Trung K? and B?c K? In which are early developed,the natural economy based on the public field system is continued to support and maintenance. And in the Nam K ? with much land and few people, relatively late developed, that is the big-landlord economy matching the big landlord ownership of land.The development of agricultural economy mainly focus on rice, rubber and other plantation economy. But the planters mainly based on the traditional tenancy relationship and used cheap labor to develop land, thus level of productivity is low, people’s poor.In addition to the agriculture, the colonial authorities attached the great importance to the non-farm field,such as mining, financial credit and transportation. In terms of trade, colonial government implemented the policy of trade protection which gradually changes with the international market situation changing, then has gained the supreme economic status in Vietnam. The mining industry developed very fast since the colonial government has use advanced technology for mining after the Great War.This makes Vietnam become the biggest coal-export country among the Indochina colonial countries.The developed loan capital is the most prominent feature of French capitalism. Colonial capitalists reap a huge profit by means of making shares control, making inflation and agricultural credit in the Bank Credit Agricole. After conquest of Vietnam, to suppress the people’s revolt and resistance, but also to more easily implement colonial economic policy and service, the colonial authorities pay close attention to the construction of transportation industry of Vietnam. Although small scale, less quantity and uneven distribution, the Vietnam’s transportation construction has obtained the considerable development.The French has developed the Vietnam colonial economy, which objectively promoted Vietnam industrial modernization and transformation of social structure, but the cruel exploitation and press make the Vietnamese people subjected to poverty and backwardness.
