On Subtitle Translation Of Pearl Harbor From Perspective Of Functional Equivalence

Foreign movies, which have been flowing into the Chinese market on a large scale in recent ten years with the development of science and technology and the coming of economic globalization, attract more and more people gradually. The accuracy of understanding about foreign movies from the receptor-language audience depends on whether the subtitle can bring out the original of the original material or not. However, the domestic subtitle translation is lack of unified translation theory to guide and the strict specifications to base on. We don’t pay enough attention to it. The accuracy of subtitle translation directly affects the liking degree and cultural exchange, which should cause attentions and concerns from more and more domestic translators and scholars. This article will take Pearl Harbor for example and analyze its subtitles translation with the guidance of Dr. Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory.According to the Functional Equivalence Theory from Dr. Nida, the subtitle translation should pay much more attention to whether the target language audience and the source language audience have the similar reaction to the same movie. To achieve the aim, the related factors of Functional Equivalence should be seriously taken and kinds of translation methods should be used. This paper, based on Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, make the study of subtitle translation of Pearl Harbor. It analyzes different logical ways of thinking, different language expression way, different religious faith and different attitude toward historical events between the target language audience and the source language audience. In accordance with the different subtitle characteristics, it offers some translation methods like transliteration, amplification for specific meaning, lessened translation, free translation, using irony translation, use the word translation with Chinese characteristics and translation of slang and idioms etc. Finally, it has a conclusion that subtitle translation should be concise and the Functional Equivalence Theory has important guiding significance to film subtitle translation.This paper includes five chapters:The first chapter mainly introduces the purposes of study, literature review at home and abroad, main content, innovation points and structures in this paper.The second chapter mainly includes the backdrop and development of Functional Equivalence Theory, the characteristics of subtitle translation and the feasibility research on Functional Equivalence Theory.The third chapter analyzes the influencing factors of Pearl Harbor to achieve functional equivalence, such as the special subtitle features and the differences between Chinese and Western culture, the appearance of popular network words and Chinese audience understanding of historical events.The forth chapter analyzes many translation methods and skills in Pearl Harbor in details, like transliteration, amplification for specific meaning, lessened translation, free translation, using irony translation, use the word translation with Chinese characteristics, translation of slang and idioms etc.Finally, the fifth chapter points out the key discoveries of this study.
