On Xy Yuanchongs Translation Of Metaphorical Images In Tang Poerty

Tang Poetry generally refers to the poetry created in the Tang Dynasty(AD 618-907) in China. In the number of poems, the beauty of images as well as the variety of forms and themes, Tang Poetry surpassed that of the preceding ages. In Tang Poetry, to achieve the effect of implicitness and conciseness poets employ images to convey their thoughts and emotions. Image translation is difficult since it is subjective, vague and symbolic. This thesis is intended to study Xu Yuanchong’s translation of metaphorical images and conclude his translation principles and tactics. It first introduces the definition, features and classification of images, analyzes the metaphorical nature of images and puts forward the definition of metaphorical images. After the analysis, it collects 86 types of metaphorical images in Three Hundred Tang Poems translated by Xu Yuanchong and classifies them according to their content. Then it studies Xu Yuanchong’s translation tactics of metaphorical images according to their mapping conditions, and concludes in the case of mapping equivalence, Xu Yuanchong adopts literal translation; in the case of mapping unequivalence, Xu Yuanchong adopts free translation tactics including substitution, supplement, paraphrase, annotation and omission.
