With the rapid development of technology, Internet has almost been used everywhere. Meanwhile, the corresponding hot words on Internet begin to extensively affect people’s daily life and communication in a special way.Hot words are not only a linguistic phenomenon, but cultural and psychological. Being a mirror, hot words reflect the mass psychology, social conditions and cultural life of a certain period of time. They have the following four features — timeliness, popularity, irregularity and culture-loadedness. In order to better communicate the unique characteristics and charm of Chinese culture, it is of necessity to call for solutions to C-E translation of hot words. Yet in contrast, studies on translation of hot words are far from enough to keep up with the development of a steady stream of newly-emerging terms on Internet. In the meantime, immature research methods fail to make it a system. On the basis of “the translator’s invisibility” proposed by Italian American scholar Lawrence Venuti, the author of this thesis will analyze C-E translation strategies of hot words on Internet(2012-2014) and summarize 6 primary methods — Chinese pinyin, blending, decomposition, derivative, word-for-word translation and interpretive translation to explore the otherness and translators’ subjectivity in translation so as to enrich the research, deepen the understanding of C-E translation of Internet hot words and promote the communication between China and English-speaking countries. |
