Mo Yan is one of the most influential writers in the contemporary literary world. He made the theory of New Historicism applied to his novel creation, gained stuff of literature from the folk, then created a unique style of novel, and was highly praised by Chinese and foreign critics. When New Historicism entered China in 1980 s,more and more scholars noticed that the New Historicism tended to break the distinction between history and text. They also noted its characteristics- paying attention to individual fate and accidents happened in history, etc. By discussing the artistic charms in Mo Yan’s literature from the perspective of New Historicism one can find out a folk historical discourse system hidden behind his novels. This article will choose the following themes: war, hunger and death, to dig into the art features in Mo Yan’s thought from the perspective of New Historicism, then provides a comprehensive analysis of folk view and historical folk discourse in his New Historicism fictions. Based on the folk, Mo Yan managed to build a pure and honest folk historical discourse. However, the folk nature inside was not simply a show of folk historical materials, but an interaction and interdependence between folk history and traditional history. Mo Yan reconstructed history with a new writing style, so his folk history had got a place in the field of historical literature.
