A Discussion On Strategies In The Translation Of The Women In His Life Through Sino-western Cultural Differences

Translation works in China, among which literature translation, as a channel of cultural communication, is one of the most important contributions. Literature translation,especially that of novels, has always involved a lot of social and cultural background information, introducing characters with various emotions and distinctive personalities, thus reflecting the profound meaning of the novel’s theme and literary value. The translator should thus endeavor to develop a detailed knowledge of the social and cultural context and try to perceive the real intention of the writer,and thus analyze the distinctions between Chinese and western culture before a piece of good translation work can be produced with loyalty to the original style as well as the contents. Therefore, practicing literature translation is considered as an efficient way to improve translating skillsThis thesis is, therefore, a summary of translation practice, which uses excerpts from the English novel The Women in His Life as the subject material. As a literature work, the excerpt of which was translated into Chinese under the guidance of cultural translation theory along with certain other translating strategies and skills gained through intensive reading. The translation of the excerpts was analyzed and summarized from four main aspects of history, aesthetics, religion and thinking patterns. Based on different cultural aspects, different translating strategies and translating skills have been adapted. It has been realized that the translation process has become more of a cultural translation rather than a simple literary conversion. Only a deep understanding of the cultural links between the original language and target language can produce excellent translation.
