| Appraisal theory is a new development proposed under the interpersonal function of systematic functional grammar. In recent years, theoretical research as well as practical application of the theory has received extensive attention. Discourse analysis as one of the main application areas of appraisal theory which provides a new perspective and theoretical framework for various fields, involving academic, legal, advertising, literature and many other genres.As the window for understanding the development of China, the government work report greatly attracts domestic and foreign people who are deeply concerned about China’s development. Economic and social development over the past year and the political attitudes and positions can be read out as well as trends of development plan in the coming year, which makes the understanding of the government work report closely related to the understanding of Chinese policy and domestic development. This paper researched on the English section of government work report to reveal the distribution and the function of attitude evaluative resources as well as their realization forms.In this paper, statistics are conducted on the vocabularies containing attitudes resources in accordance with three sub-systems, namely affect, judgment and appreciation.According to statistics, the evaluative resources in the English section of the government work report are mostly positive, while negative evaluative resources are rare; Evaluative resources are manifested mainly in invoke form which play a role in enhancing the objectivity of the article; among three subsystems judgment resources occupies majority,which concentrates on the capability to demonstrate the achievements of government in the past year; Resources of appreciation mostly fall in valuation; Resources of affect has least proportion in order to reduce subjectivity. This distribution pattern is in line with the genre of government work report to serve its function. |
