Translation Strategies Of The “EN13236 European Safety Requirements For Superabrasive Products”

Superabrasive product is a category of cutting or grinding tools applied to industry and used for a commercial purpose. Generally, it uses diamond as main raw material and steel as matrix, manufactured by sintering or welding. The superabrasive products have a large amount of application in the world’s tool industry, for its technical simplicity and reliable quality. As a large country of processing and manufacturing industry, Chinese diamond tool industries have adopted the latest international standards as the criteria of reference for research and development.The research object of the thesis is the translation process of “EN13236: 2008 Safety Requirements for Superabrasive Products”, which is the European Safety Standard in the field of superabrasive products. The thesis analyzes the characteristics and translation strategies of English for Science and Technology(EST), and elaborates its linguistic and stylistic features, proceeding with vocabularies and syntax. It investigates the linguistic style of EST translation, especially technical standards, and researches the translation issues of terminologies and long sentences. Based on “equivalent translation”, this report discusses the translation of nouns used as descriptive words and common words with special meanings when used in specific area as well as the technique of amplification.The report also explores the maintenance and adjustment of the original word order as well as sentence splitting in the translation of long sentences for the purpose of“equivalently” expressing the information of the original text.In the translation circumstance under the globalization, the translator should be equipped not only with bilingual abilities, but also with comprehensive qualities,strengthening theoretical research on the basis of practice to acquire greater proficiency in translation.
