| Laymen sayings, daily observations, and scientific evidence all suggest that shared experiences are amplified. However, it is unclear if emotional experiences would be one of them. In addition, the nature of this amplification is unclear. In Experiment 1, we conducted a field study during the Brazil vs. Chile match in World Cup 2014 and showed that negative emotions are amplified as group size of this shared experience increases among Brazil supporters. In Experiments 2a and 2b, we propose an "appraisal- confirmation-amplification" model to explain the effect based on iterative "social appraisal theory" and "shared reality theory".we showed that in response to a negative or positive trigger, the respective emotions became reduced as the emotion of an individual can not be confirmed. Experiment 3 showed that even when subjects can not have the verbal communication, the amplification effect was still observed. It is indicating that individuals can get emotional confirmation by various means. These findings prove the amplification effect of group share emotions exists and "appraisal- confirmation- amplification" model can be used for explaining the effect. |
