Abstract/Summary:
As a significant part of the study in natural language processing, machine translation has drawn more attention along with the development of computer science and technology. Machine translation can be classified into three types: electronic dictionary, computer aided translation and machine translation software. Machine translation software is widely used as the ancillary tool in individuals’ daily work, hence the machine translation software is selected as the study object.Chapter 9, It’s water. Of course it’s free of the book entitled The Big Thirst composed by an American author named Charles Fishman, was selected as the practice material. Machine translation and human translation have been processed on the above material. These translated texts are compared with each other. According to the analysis, there exist several defects, which are improper translation of terms, analyzing mistakes of sentences and inappropriate translation of sentences. The solutions are: amending translation sentences through machine translation software and transforming the structure of the original sentences before machine translation.Several conclusions are drawn as follows: First, machine translation has defects such as improper selections of words, low recognition of sentence patterns and inaccurate translation of sentence structures. Therefore, it can not replace human as a translator. Second, compared with Youdao Translation, Google translation works better on intelligibility and loyalty.
