The 21st Century is an ocean-focused one. In the previous century, human civilization has experienced unprecedented progress and advancement. Accompanying this process was not only all the benefit it brought about, but also the harm and destruction that has been done to the Mother Nature, the natural resources, and ecological environment. The vast blue ocean, a cradle of life on earth, was unfortunately one of its primary victims. It is imperative that prompt measures be taken to protect the ocean, but in order to do that, one must learn to understand the vast blue ocean first. This book, OCEAN-The Definitive Visual Guide, is an encyclopaedia on ocean that carries such a goal as to help the general public learn more about the ocean. It is primarily a science-technology translation project. The author selected the major parts of Chapter Two in the book as the subject for the translation project, recording and analysing the whole translation process, before summarizing the issues and key points that worth noticing during the process into this translation report. It also includes theories and skills the author applied during translation and is devided into four chapters. The first chapter offers introductions to the translation project including the schedule of translation. The second chapter describes the preparatory work the author has done before translation and a brief introduction of the theory of functional equivalence proposed by Eugene A.Nida. The third chapter is about the application of the functional equivalence theory and analysis of difficult issues with examples form the book, with the final chapter a summary stating the main points of the entire process and the transformation occurred in terms of the author’s understanding and approach to translation, as well as a change in attitude.
