This thesis is designed to explore the effectiveness of dictogloss-based listening practice on vocational college English majors’listening proficiency. The following procedures such as pretest, dictogloss teaching experiment, posttest, a questionnaire survey, an interview and feedback paper are carried out for the study. To get more convincing and reliable conclusions, all of the data are analyzed by using both quantitative and qualitative approaches.A total of 69 juniors majored in business English from two parallel classes in Shandong Foreign Trade Vocational College are chosen by the author to serve as Experimental Group(EG), i.e.Class Four and Control Group (CG), i.e. Class Three. The EG receives dictogloss-based training in class while the CG is taught by traditional approach as usual.Dictogloss training session lasts 15 weeks,i.e. starts from 11th March 2014 to 24th June 2014. Both classes are taught by the author and dictogloss training is conducted in listening class in EG once a week.By comparing the scores of the pretest and posttest in CG and EG and summarizing the main information collected from the questionnaire and interview, the results have shown that:(1)Dictogloss training has more positive influences on the listening proficiency of vocational college English majors compared with traditional teaching method as usual;(2) Dictogloss-based practice has a significant impact on the listening proficiency of students of LSG in EG while no significant differences can be found in the performance of HSG in EG;(3)Most students in EG show positive attitudes towards dictogloss and at the same time it has a significant impact on arousing students’interest in learning English.A total of five chapters are concluded in the thesis. The first chapter is a general introduction of the background followed by the purposes of the study and the organization of the thesis.Chapter two presents the definition of dictogloss, its theoretical framework and dictogloss-related empirical studies at home and abroad. Chapter three is concerned with the design of the experiment, including the research questions, subjects, the procedures of the experiment, materials for dictoloss practice and the specific steps of dictotgloss practice. Chapter four presents the results of the three research questions one by one based on the data analysis and discussion. In the last chapter, some further suggestions are put forward with an aim to offering some benefits for English listening teaching and learning for both professors and students in vocational college. It is hoped that the whole research will offer practical help for teachers and students from both vocational colleges and universities.
