Along with the acceleration of globalization of culture, postmodern film is flourishing around the world. Since 1990s, postmodern film has made satisfying achievements and emerged in a new form. As a German director, Tom Tykwer’s first film is Deadly Maria, in which the audiences for the first time recognize his grasp of rhythm and speed. His famous film Lola Rennt is also shining in this aspect, which become a brand new start for German postmodernism film in 21th century. Based on the discourse background of postmodernism film and the process of Tom Tykwer’s personal growth, this thesis analyzes Tom Tykwer’s postmodernism films from the aspect of the theme expression, the narrative strategy, the multimedia rendering, the value of the film and its inspiration to Chinese films. Chapter One studies on the theme of the film. The art theme of the films can be mainly classified in two aspects, the expression of the attention and desire for life subject, and the new interpretation and deep concern of love. Chapter Two discusses Tom Tykwer’s postmodern films from the aspect of modern ideas of time and space and the postmodern narrative structure, namely the postmodern fragment time, construction of "third space" in postmodernism, opening lens language system of nonlinear narrative and multiple space-time parallel split ring. Chapter Three studies from the perspective of multimedia rendering of Tom Tykwer’s postmodern films, and analyzes his unique artistic personality and postmodernism director skills from the aspect of moving camera shooting, powerful sense of color, and stylized performance. Chapter Four affirms Tom Tykwer’s value as a postmodernism German film explorer by showing the value of Tom Tykwer’s postmodern films and its enlightenment to the Chinese films. At last, the thesis concludes the research of Tom Tykwer’s films in postmodern context, and put forward the way to break through the problem in film production, the rescue of the film itself and the developing direction of film in the future. At the same time, this thesis discusses the existing problems and prospects for development by analyzing the present situation of new German film and developing trend in postmodern film. The author hopes that this thesis can provide some beneficial reference to the development of Chinese films in the future, so that enhance the spirit of Chinese postmodern films.
