As a large number of directors who are currently activing in the Chinese movie industry, the sixth generation is becoming the backbone of the Chinese movie making, because of their unique and complicated style movies. The existential is the most popular one of the modern western philosophys, it met with the sixth generation directors in China and provided a new philosophical context for their movies. This is a new attempt to explore the ontology of the sixth generation’s movies on the horizon of existentialism. This paper first to collect the sixth generation’s movies with the existential characteristics, then to the qualitative and quantitative analysis, and finally, observes them. The present paper can be divided into three parts:the introduction, summary and the conclusion. The introduction mainly involved the basic concept of existentialism, existential relationship with the film, and the relationship between the existential and Chinese movies. The synthesis discusses the existential characteristics found from the figures, themes and narrations of the sixth generation’s movies, and the analysis about why existentialism impacts the creation of their movies. The conclusion summarizes the full paper, and points out that the same spirit which both in existentialism and the sixth generation’s movies-humanitarianism.
