The Strategies On Tackling The Fuzzy Information In The Business Conference

With the continuous development of reform and opening up, China has been promoting its communication with countries from all over the world in politics, economy, culture and education, which allows a wide space for the development and research in interpretation. In the academic field of translation, the study on fuzzy information has gained a good momentum since 1970s. The present report analyzes the strategies on how to tackle the fuzzy information from the perspective of interpretation.The report addresses the difficulties the reporter met when he worked as an interpreter during the Official Olympic Culture Exchange Conference between Nanjing and London. The difficulties are all concerned with the interpretation of fuzzy information concerning statistics, complex sentences and new words. Drawing upon the equivalence theory proposed by Nida and also upon his personal experience as an interpreter, the reporter puts forward the resolutions to the three types of problems respectively. To address the statistics-related fuzzy information, the principle of fuzzilization may be adopted to approximate the target number. To address the fuzzy information resulting from complex sentences, it is necessary to identify the subjects of the non-subject sentences through logical clues. Finally, to address the fuzzy information caused by new words, paraphrasing may be adopted in the Chinese-to-English interpreting, and the interpreter may resort to contextual clues in the English-to-Chinese interpreting.The strategies provided in the present report for the interpretation of fuzzy information emerging from statistics, complex sentences fuzzy information and new words fuzzy information may help both MTI students and in-service interpreters improve the qualities and efficiency of their work.
