David Herbert Lawrence is one of the most important writers of English Literature in the 20 th century, as well as a controversial writer. On one hand, he received fierce criticism and attacks because his works portrayed too much pornography. On the other hand, he spared no effort to explore the depths of the human soul, and successfully applied touching artistic describing in his works. Most of the critics think that Lawrence is born in the patriarchy of the industrialization in the UK, so he is a male chauvinist. However, due to the author’s own experience and the international wave of feminism,he can’t be judged from one point of view. Depending on the feminism theory, this paper tries to supply a number of evidence, elaborating how the women in Lawrence’s novels achieve the success, finding that he is not only a male chauvinist, but also an explorer of feminism. It also hopes to provide a further interpretation to study Lawrence’s works and the literary research of feminism.This paper will explore the female figures in Lawrence’s three novels: Sons and Lovers, The Rainbow and Lady Chatterley’s Lover. It is divided into five chapters as follows.The first chapter mainly makes an introduction of Lawrence’s life and major works, and the study of literature review of Lawrence and his works at home and abroad in recent years. Further more, it clarifies the new discovery of the thesis.The second chapter is the whole thesis’ s theoretical basis, taking the research perspectives of the definition, genre and development of feminism.The third chapter is detailed in the three stages of women characters in Lawrence’s novels under the background of industrialized society: first, the traditional female, representative as Mrs. Moore; second, the awakening women, representative as Ursula; third, the awakened women, representative as Connie. Through the comparative analysis, it finds that what problems the social women of different stages in Lawrence’s novels would meet.The fourth chapter is the study that different women choose different solutions for their realization of self-salvation in Lawrence’s works, gradually breaking away from the numb devastation of industrialization by the pursuit of self-realization. This theme also inevitably deepens the thought of human relations, continuously explores women’s roles in the society, and points out the most essential goal for the development of human’s relationship: returning to nature.The fifth chapter is the conclusion part of the paper. On one hand, Lawrence provides valuable material for feminism research as an advancing feminist. On the other hand, Lawrence’s guidance of life for women still has practical significance nowadays;...
