The Study On The Syntactic Features Of “Chadian (Mei) +VP” Construction In The Generative Paradigm

Aiming at the phenomenon of redundant negation and ambiguity on “chadian(mei)+VP” construction, there are many academic research on linguistics, most of them analyses the semantic feature of “VP” in “chadian(mei)+VP” construction by classification to eliminate ambiguity, but the study on formation of this ambiguity sentence is still insufficient. Meanwhile whether “chadian(mei)+VP” construction have redundancy and the sense of this sentence pattern is negative or positive need to be further discussed. Based on the above aspects, this article present and try to solve several problems as follows:(1) The factor of redundant “mei” in “chadian(mei) + VP” construction and the function of this “mei”.(2) The feasibility of make an interpretation to the ambiguity of “chadian(mei)+ VP” construction caused by negation redundant under TG grammar.Through analyzes and summarizes the research in the field, the article come to the conclusion that the cause of “chadian(mei) +VP” construction can be both understood as the negative and positive in that the “mei” in this construction not only gets the function to negate the following but also the function of double negatives. Though “mei” here loses part of negative meaning in those cases, it is not redundant in the construction. It plays a dominant role in metalinguistic use, which slows it to negate the complement of VP rather than the action of VP. Due to different perspectives, affects and modalities, the negative form can express the same propositional meaning as that of its corresponding affirmative form. Based on the theory of Syntax, Syntax is the study of the rules governing the ways different constituents are combined to form sentences in a language, and the study of the interrelationships between elements in sentence structures. Syntactic relations can be analyzed into three kinds, namely, positional relations, relations of substitutability and relations of co-occurrence. And based on these previous studies, the paper analyzes reasons for the ambiguity formatted by “chadian(mei) +VP” construction within TG Grammar, investigates its use tendency in people’s language sense and corpus, then explores and analyzes the formation process of the ambiguity. In the view of “chadian(mei) + VP” construction, study the syntactic characteristics of it. Study under the TG Grammar, this article discusses from six aspects as distinction between positive and negative, distinction between Empty reference and Notional reference, Prosodic Features, Context, Inclinations and Object facts to eliminating the syntactical ambiguity of “chadian(mei) +VP” construction. Aiming at the ambiguity that generated in the mechanism--the α Movement, D-structure and S-structure, that caused by more than one Deep structure are moved or transformed into an identical Surface structure.The distinctive feature of the study of the syntactic of “chadian(mei) +VP” construction in this thesis is the studying process that a sentence appear in brain of Deep Structure move through α-Movement into Surface Structure to create a written or spoken sentence at last. Finally, we come to the conclusion that ambiguity is formed in the derivation of a sentence. And make an attempt to set forth the ambiguity derivation of “chadian(mei) +VP” construction. Moreover, this article also sums up some daily conversations and useful drills which are similar to “chadian(mei) +VP” construction. We found that this study within TG Grammar will make contributions not only to offer a new perspective to do the research and deepen the understanding of on “chadian(mei) +VP” construction, but also has a great promotion in Chinese language teaching.
