This paper mainly studies the painter Li Yi shi who as the early generation for receiving overseas study in the late Qing Dynasty and the early Republic period.The paper divides into three parts to research Mr Li. The first part expounds his life which from three aspects, his family circumstance, the experience of studying abroad and his later years living to research him, having a in-depth research in all aspects of its artistic activities. The second part is a parsing of Mr Li major works to deeply analyze the impact of his artistic characteristics and painting style. Last part is about Mr Li’s teaching career after his overseas study.He had imparted the west painting theory to China and made a outstanding contributions for promoting the fusion of Chinese and Western painting. Mr Li put forward his own view on ‘two xu dispute’ among the painting movement of republic of China.
