O’Neill is an American playwright in the 21 th century and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature.The paper analyzes O’Neill family tragedy.His specific family background and life experience result to his focus on family problems.Some of his famous plays,including《Beyond the Horizon》,《Desire Under the Elms 》《Mourning Becomes Electra 》《 Long Days Journey into Night 》 all reflect the same theme about family,Thus,this paper supposes that “family tragedy”can be seen as one particular aspect of the study about O’Neill.By analyzing and the interpreting four family tragedies,the paper figures out that there are three pattems in O’Neill family tragedy.and it goes further into the causes of the tragedy and his writing style.Finally,the aesthetic significance is pointed out.The paper thinks that O’Neill is tragedies rises from the family conflicts and pushes them to the climax,which makes these trivial conflicts tragic.Hence,O’Neill is a master of family tragedy.
