Ornament plays a role of embellishing the melody in piano works. Because it is not the main part of a musical work, it’s controversial on the issue that how to play ornament correctly. Dealing with ornament, players often set it as a goal of simple skill training. For example, how to delimit the quantity of vibrato?How to keep the harmony with the rhythm of the left hand? Does the performance style of boeing come before the main tune or after? What’s more, ornament in every phrase has its specific performance style. In live performance, players won’t be very particular about the content or form of ornament. In the history of music, ornament has existed in every period. It is one of the creating methods with which composers express musical features and composers of different periods have their own advantages of using ornament and dealing with music. The playing of ornament covers musical notation, symbol meaning, playing methods of instrument, etc. A macro understanding of ornament’s characteristics will facilitate the general understanding of a musical work’s stylistic characteristics.Ornament exists in Baroque keyboard music everywhere, especially very common in Bach’s works. From Bach era to classicism era, ornament evolves with the changing time. And Bach’s works have epoch-making significance. Mozart carried on the forefathers’ creating tradition on ornament, had a general use and promoted the development of it. This thesis selects Mozart’s piano sonata as the object of study and generalizes and concludes the external characteristics and connotative meaning of the ornament in Mozart’s works, which provides the reference for piano teaching and performing.This thesis is consisted with three chapters. The first chapter is The Classicism’s Influence on Mozart, which mainly demonstrates the general overview of Classicism’s music and sonata’s characteristics, grapes the style and features of classicism generally and provides the understanding of the influence put on Mozart’s creating by this period. The second chapter is about Ornaments of different periods have different features. The periods of Baroque, Classicism and Romanticism can be a good example. It helps players have more understanding of the ornament in the period of Classicism to study the creating characteristics of ornaments in the three periods. The third chapter is The Specific Characteristics of the Ornament in Mozart’s Piano Sonata. It contains two parts. The first part states the style and features of Mozart’s piano sonata generally. The second one expounds the characteristics of Mozart’s ornament and the keys of his playing. And the author uses K.279 as a particular studying object to analyze the concrete playing methods of all the ornament in this sonata. The fourth chapter is The Differentiating Study of the Playing Methods of the Ornament in Mozart Piano Sonata, which has two parts. The first one is the mutual influence among the ornaments in sonatas between Mozart, Haydn and Beethoven.The second one analyzes the playing methods of the ornament in Mozart’s piano sonata from the aspects of famous musician’s opinions about his playing methods and the author’s suggestion of playing Mozart’s ornament.
