The popularity of the unconscious can be tracked back to mid-19 th century in the western world. At that time, the unconscious was discussed by many ideologists and psychologists, and was given the academic status by Sigmund Freud, who pointed out that the mental process conducted by the unconscious was “the authentic psychic reality” and outweighed the conscious. The unconscious plays a significant role in psychoanalytic theory, and it also expands the psychological research field as well as offers the multi-dimension methods to explore the mental phenomenon. Nowadays, the unconscious has been the notion employed in the different disciplines such as psychopathology, philosophy, psychology, pathergasiology, history and so on.This translation aims to introduce the unconscious into China in order to promote academic commutation between China and western countries. Meanwhile, Chinese readers, through reading the translation of The Unconscious, recognize the unconscious in the mind, learn the positive elements and keep the active selfdevelopment. In addition, the application of relevant translation theories and strategies in the translation of The Unconscious were tested. The translator chooses the chapter four The Unconscious of Freud as the translation practice and research. Freud, as one of The Cambridge Companion to philosophy, is published by Cambridge University Press. The author in this chapter discusses the unconscious and its essence from the perspective of Philosophy. The Language in The Unconscious never pursues for beauty, but instead attaches more importance to the preciseness and accuracy. For its vocabulary, its words appear professional because the text is involved in philosophy and psychology. For its sentence pattern, a great deal of passive sentences and complicated sentences are employed in order to guarantee objective statements and coherent logic. The translator hereby acquires abundant background information, chooses the effective translation tools, and selects the proper translation theory through searching and reading a plenty of parallel texts. During the process of translation, Nord’s text analysis theory and Walter Benjamin’s pure language theory are employed to guide the translation practice, and intratextual and extratextual factors affecting the translators are analyzed as well. The translation is supposed to express the intrinsic features of the original text. Literal and free translation methods are mainly used, and inversion and division translation strategies are also applied to some special sentence patterns. From this translation research, the translator effectively employed pure language translation theory and some translating strategies to solve the specific issues in the text. This report also discusses the qualities of translator and summarizes the gains and findings as well as the limitation of the translation during the translation practice. The translating method and the term listed in this report will be the reference to the following translation study in this field.
