Sight translation could be called a kind of relatively unique interpretation form. In interpreting teaching, sight translation often is seen as a means to improve the ability of an interpreter training. In addition, sight translation is a kind of real practice at work. Now there are many business meeting forms, for example, is the draft translation. Sight translation is short for "visual reading interpretation", which is a form that a translator read the draft with translating in oral way. It has immediacy, so does the simultaneous interpretation. The sight translation and the simultaneous interpretation all require that the speed of translation is consistent with the speed of reading. Therefore they have to be finished in short time and with very high work load. While there are some obvious differences about vocabulary and words order between chinese and japanese. So these differences can cause a phenomenon that a translator can’t finish sight translation according to the principle of translating word for word. However it can be solved effectively by predicting the meaning of the rear part in one sentence and translating in advance. This way obviously avoids translation pause and makes translation fluent. What’s more, that makes interpreter less nervous and improve the quality of sight translation. Therefore, the study of sight translation prediction is very meaningful. While, in fact, now most researches on sight translation focus on its features and process, etc. Clearly the study on specific sight translation prediction still has certain gap.For the analysis above, this paper, based on the perspective of relevance theory, discusses the concrete application of prediction in sight translation practice. Relevance theory is that people can make clear each other’s communicative intention through the assumption of context. In addition, in the dynamic context in communication, people can reach the optimal relevance of the language by the process of express and reasoning. This process is how an interpreter translates. This paper combines relevant theories and examples to achieve this study on translation prediction methods, which contains three aspects: paragraphs, sentences and words.Prediction, a skill of sight translation, especially plays a key role for complex sentence translation. This paper aims to find out some directions and laws of sight translation prediction and then enhance the accuracy and enthusiasm of prediction. These findings and conclusions will be helpful to reduce the pressure of a translator and make most translation accurate, smooth and more efficient when he or she translates something quickly. At the same time, if this study can be drawn upon for the simultaneous interpretation, it would be more meaningful for the field of translation.
