| Thomas Hardy is a giant writer on the English literary arena of the 19 th century. Among his works, Wessex novels are the most famous. Wessex novels include 6 works, and Tess of the d’Urbervilles is recognized as the most meaningful Wessex novel written by Thomas Hardy. Since the novel was published in 1891, critics have interpreted the novel with different theories. But there is only a little study on the symbols of Bible, space, time and other natural symbols of this novel. Therefore, under the theoretical foundation of symbolism, this article will analyze the use of symbols in Tess of the d’Urbervilles and the complex connection with the fate of heroin Tess, exposing Tess’ s miserable fate.The first chapter briefly introduces the writer Thomas Hardy’s life and the influence of his living environment on his novel creation. Moreover, the author also briefly introduces the main content of Tess of the d’Urbervilles.The second chapter states the research status about Tess of the d’Urbervilles from the experts and scholars at home and abroad, and then states the unique parts of this article.In the third chapter, the author states the theory basis--- symbolism for this paper, stating symbol, symbolism and the connection between symbol and symbolism one by one.The forth chapter is the main part of the paper. The author detailedly analyzes the important natual symbols. Firstly the author analyzes the different life stages of Tess through the angle of time and space transfer., and then, the author analyzes other natural symbols, such as, red, birds, plants, light and darkness and tears and mist. Through the analysis the author explores its symbolic meaning and reveals Tess’ s miserable life. Then the author discusses the biblical symbols of the novel. Hardy is deeply influenced by Christian, and the novel Tess of the d’Urbervilles has many similarities with the Bible. In addition to analyze the similarities between the main characters Tess, Angel, Alec and Eve, Job, Adam, Angel, Satan, the author also analyzes the symbolic meaning of the novel’s church and cross. Through the analysis of these symbols,this paper reveals the tragic fate of Tess and the tragic color of this novel.The last chapter is the conclusion, summarizing the full text and the core content and meaning of this article: The symbols Hardy chose are provided with tragic color, undoubtedly, it enhances the tragic atmosphere of the novel. Meanwhile it also gives the work a deeper meaning. Using the theory of symbolism to explain Hardy’s work is not often set foot in a traditional research area. Through the angle of symbolism, the author analyzes the use of symbols in the novel. By the analysis of these symbols, the paper more deeply reveals the miserable life of Tess.
