| New Youth, one of the most important journals in the New Culture Movement, is of extraordinary importance during the social-cultural transformation period in China. The journal advocates science and democracy and publishes plenty of literary works to oppose the feudal ideologies while promoting the new.As essential ingredients of literary translation in New Youth, drama translation is of great significance in spite of its small quantity. Those drama versions are miniatures of translated literature in that period.Translators’ rewriting of the original to cater to the social need reveals the enormous impacts of literary mainstream on translation. Therefore, a study on it is imperative and significant.Rewriting theory, put forward by André Lefevere, provides a new research perspective in translation studies. Based on culture aspect of translation activities, the theory emphasizes that translation is rewriting and the nature of rewriting is manipulation. Rewriting in different periods is subject to certain constrains such as ideologies and dominant poetics, and it connects with power then turns out to be one of its devices.According to the theory, all translation activities are manipulated by ideology, poetics and patronage.This thesis attempts to make a detailed analysis on drama translation in New Youth from the three aspects mentioned above, with a purpose of demonstrating the explanation power of rewriting theory to the certain translation phenomenon. Besides, this thesis further discusses the major contributions of drama translation in New Youth in the development of Chinese literature and culture. |
