Chen Canyun is a representative writer with writing style of Lingnan characteristic culture. Until now, academia has given more concentration on evaluation of politics and morals about Chen’s novels during the period of the republic of China and focus on the dark reality under the Kuomintang rule as well as the variety of people’s suffering reflected by Chen’s novels. Therefore, it’s necessary to explore the breadth and depth of Chen’s novels. If we want to understand spiritual process and evaluate Chen’s works’ value objectively, "humanity writing" is a worth exploring topic. Reviewing Chen’s spiritual process, we can find a very important turning point appearing on the outside situation’s change. In order not to be considered as a heresy, Chen wrote a reflective article named Feng Sha de Cheng de Zi Wo Jian Tao. From then on, Chen never came back to his heart of literary creation. Now if we want to recreate and reevaluate Chen and humanity writing of his novels during this period, especially for returning to them, and use defamiliarization again and communicate as well as reflecting deeply with modern knowledge.There is no denying that it is indispensible to focus on the topic of human throughout the study of novels. The appearance of humanity is inconsistent in different periods. Especially in acme environment, the action will reflect the hidden secret from their hearts. Facing the war environment, Chen formulated the reflection of sin and the possibility of redemption from the writing of suffering with distortion of human nature, trapping in the lost of human nature and receiving depression of human nature. At the same time, we can finally draw a conclusion about his outlook on war that is sin and repentance from above humanity writing. Chen dug deep inside human’s heart, explored the motivation of the lost of humanity, so the humanity in Chen’s novels isn’t the single dimension, but it is filled with contradiction as well as struggling and expresses human’s pain as well as despair. What merits a special note is that he has observed moral responsibility that everyone can’t escape under the war environment, so he put himself into novels and repent as well as undertaking responsibility altogether with characters in novels. We can feel pity and forgiveness he showed on characters and find that he hoped to search for transcendental view on "anti-tration". Facing the distortion of human nature, Chen was concentrated deeply on human’s fate and moral responsibility with understandable heart when entering into souls of characters.While writing about trapping in the lost of human nature, novels enter into human’s heart and observe the changes of humanity in the war days of material scarcity and at the appealing of revolutionary ideal. For one thing, characters are facing different kinds of temptations. For another, because conscience in their heart stands out judging their lust, so they will rethink profoundly and repent. Under the action of above two points, lost humanity suffers ordeal, even torture.Humans are experiencing suppression under the war environment. Not only ordinary people but also the powerful are experiencing the above situation. The major performance is that the natural and man-made disaster which assaults humanity and feudal ethical code that constraints humanity have destroyed stable living order as well as overall interest of human. Besides, personal desires also receive suppression, which will release them for acquiring the biggest compensation in the aspect of material and mentality if they have changes. However, they can’t receive decent results and then get into bigger trouble because once these desires are overexpansion and don’t communicate nervously with conscience in their hearts, they can’t find roads which seek an end to suffering, let alone generating ideas about atonement. Therefore, even if a war ends, there is nothing that can alter the situation of suppression.Except for showing sin of human soul, Chen also took charge of the mission of saving our soul. In the era of war, Chen observed and rethought profoundly humanity existential predicament. When exploring the road to redeem, Chen added a dimension of the awareness of sin. During this process, he not only arranged his characters to stick to their heart, but also take up their broken ideals with patience and care human noble souls with kind heart as well as love, which has become spiritual motif of his writing with profound value and connotation. However, it is not enough to make such a detailed inquiry. Actually, these reservation roads Chen’s novels demonstrate can come true in temporal world but lack the voice of other world, so it is limited for Chen to analyze human inherent spirit and show abundant dimensions of soul. In addition, he didn’t offer answers about new possibility of human survival.War, which has been played down the background of humanity, is one of constituent parts in Chen’s novels. What Chen mostly focused on was still human’s living circumstance and spiritual plight. Chen expressed his specific understanding of humanity in order to make a detailed inquiry about taking on the moral obligation, rethought profoundly the original sin of humanity and used objective view and humane mind to look on struggling and lost of humanity in the war environment, including looking into his own soul. Although characters in novels can’t get rid of the original sin, they still bear their sufferings in order to obtain redemption and look for life existent meaning of themselves, which has confirmed Chen’s outlook on war that is sin and repentance from humanity writing of Chen’s novels during this period. In fact, these novels have awareness of making a detailed inquiry about the ultimate end of saving humanity. However, when he needed to offer deep insight into the lost of humanity in the war environment and search for the road to redeem when humans face hardships, Chen was converted to mainstream and gave up holding fast to personal conscience. From then on, Chen, who still continued walking on a realistic scale, didn’t generate ideas about surpassing temporal world and trudging towards the other world. |
