This report is concerned about the translation of Chapter Nine and Chapter Ten of Part III, an important part of Chinese Culturology (by Professor Qin Deqing,2015). This part of the book mainly describes the division standards and contents of Chinese regional culture structure as well as the cultural traits of north China.Nida’s "functional equivalence" is applied to analyze the difficulties in the translation. Firstly, the author gives an introduction to translation goals, meanings and approaches of the text, and then analyzes the source, contents, feature, and the guiding principles. The following part introducesthe details of the guiding theory, namely Nida’s "functional equivalence". Preparation before the translation is discussed next, including the reading of the text and parallel texts, searching of relevant thesis and the importance of team work. The most important part is to explore the main translation approaches used in the translation practice with the illustration of specific examples. e.g., many similar words and expressions are used to translate the same word or expression in Chinese:as the cultural related translation, literal translation approach, liberal translation approach, literal translation approach plus interpretation and transliteration approach are widely applied in the translation process. The last part of the report is the conclusion summarizing the experiences and deficiencies during the translation, and suggestions for future endeavor are put forward.
