English learning motivation plays a great role in numerous factors which affect students’ English learning. There are many studies on English learning motivation at home and abroad, but the subjects of the most studies are university students and middle school students while independent college students are paid little attention to. Those studies on independent college students are very few.The students of independent college are as a group of a new and special type of high education. Even though they gain the general features like common university students, and they also have their own characters. The author believes that the study on the current situation of English learning motivation of independent college students is worthwhile and chooses the study on English leaning motivation of independent college students as the topic of the thesis.In order to improve and stimulate English learning motivation of independent college students, the author has conducted the research at the S Independent College in Hunan province to find the problems in English learning motivation of its students, through analyzing the data and combining with relative theories. S Independent College in Hunan province is established in early years in Hunan and has wide and developed majors. And the author also consults the samples of the previous studies on English learning motivation and the result shows that S Independent College has some common features with them. So the problems of English learning motivation of S Independent College can also reflect the problems of English learning motivation of other independent colleges in some distance.The author obtains the current situation of S Independent College students’ English learning motivation through questionnaire and interview methods, and analyzes the related factors which affect their types and intensity of English learning motivation. The results show that the English learning motivation of S Independent College students is diversified and the types of indirect English learning motivation play a leading role; the English learning motivation is unbalanced and it has significant differences in gender, grade, professional dimension. And the main problems of their English learning motivation are as follows: the intensity of English learning motivation is lower; the English learning is too utilitarian and the motivation of English learning is not stable. Finally, the author offers some strategies for stimulating the subjects’ English learning motivation from the data of questionnaire and the interviews with students and teachers and combining some theories from the Education Science and Psychology. First, know the numerous needs of students, and cultivate their interests; second, build a positive expectation, and stimulate English learning motivation; third, guide and help the students to achieve success and cultivate English learning motivation; forth, improve the teachers’ quality and stimulate English leaning motivation. The author hopes that these strategies can have some guiding influences on promoting the English leaning motivation of independent students and then improve their social competitiveness.
