In recent years, s poken Chinese t eaching materials for foreign learners have made some great prog ress by absorbing researches from all aspects. In this article, we sel ect two starter level spoken Chinese textbooks since 2000, S tep by S tep Chinese ? Chinese Speaking Elementary and Conversational Ch inese 301 as subjects, using data statistics, charts show, comparative analysis, literature study m ethod and questionnaires to build a database for m ultiple objects on these two textbooks. On this basis, the basic principles of writing spoken Chinese textbooks and questionnaires are com bined together to come up wit h summaries and analysis on the writte n features and patterns of them. Some shortcomings are also analyzed and evaluated to point out some advices on amendments for these two primary spoken English teaching materials. This thesis includes five pa rts all together. The first part is the introduction of the research purpose of this article and its significance, a synthesis of all documents that are mentioned, and also its research subjects, research perspectives and research methods that are used. Part 2 to part 4 are the main body of this thes is. In part 2, the layout format of the two books is thoroughl y and sta tistically compared and analyzed, including the basic framework of the text, the text form, character set and communicative role set, the text lengt h layout and so on. The third part mainly talks about topics chosen in the two books, by running comparative analysis am ong the topi c types, functional items and episodic items to summarize their advantages and disadvantages.The fourth part runs co mparative analysis among culture objects, begins with defining the scope of what “culture” refers to in this thesis, and lists out the specific type of culture projects, including the total project, subprojects and other specific culture factors underneath. It will do systematical statistics and analysis to find out every book’ s pros and cons. The fifth part is also the last one; based on statistics and analysis of what are discussed all above, com bined with the actual book writing the answers of questionnaires from the teac hers and students as reference, to make some suggesti ons to S tep by Step Chinese ? Chinese Speaking Elementary and Conversational Chinese 301.
