| As an important representative of Ordinary Language School, Grice put forward the theory of Conversational Implicature in 1960 s, which has made great contributions to the development of pragmatics. On one hand, combining people?s intention with language meaning and pragmatic functions, Grice gives an effective explanation for people?s communicative purpose. On the other hand, Cooperative Principle presented by Grice is still considered as one of the most influential rules in pragmatics and the basic conversational principle in people?s daily life. In terms of current research, many scholars have made comprehensive elaboration and extended analysis of Grice?s Conversational Implicature in different views. However, most of them have paid much attention to the analysis of the Cooperative Principle in the form, or the meaning inference mechanism in the Conversational Implicature. This thesis intends to study Grice?s Cooperative Principle from a different angle. From the perspective of aesthetics in speech, by exploring Grice?s Conversational Implicature, the paper aims to demonstrate that the generation of Conversational Implicature is actually a reflection of beauty. Through detailed analysis of the common phenomena in daily life, the author finds that people always violate Cooperative Principle to achieve some effects of implied, humorous and balanced beauty. Therefore, to some extent, the process of generating and inferring Grice?s Conversational Implicature is an embodiment of understanding and appreciating beauty. In addition, by means of Cooperative Principle, building implied, humorous and balanced beauty consciously in some certain contexts can make people realize communicative intention and achieve better communication. The thesis attempts to study Grice?s Conversational Implicature from a new perspective, which will not only enrich the understanding of the theory, but also provide an effective means of maintaining interpersonal relationship for people in communication. |
