Translation Practice Report On Economic And Social History Of Modern Japan

Economic and Social History of Modern Japan is the work from Doctor Hayami Akira, a Japanese Professor of Economic History and Historical Demography. The translation work starts from chapter three of part one to part six, in which the writer mainly elaborated the important economic policies in Edo Period and their impacts on people’s social life. The writer quoted a large amount of demographic survey data to explain the development status and basic characteristics of economy and society of Edo period from a historical demographical point, Doctor Hayami Akira brought up the concept of "Industrious Revolution", and he points out that "Industrious Revolution" determined the distinctiveness of the economic and social development of Edo Period, and formed the industrious character of Japanese people. During the translation work, translator trained the translation skill, accumulated the professional knowledge of economics and sociology, and also improved the translation ability. This is the translation project report of Economic and Social History of Modern Japan. During the writing process of this report, translator reviewed the whole process of translation, and summarized the experience and insufficiency of the practice. This translation project report is divided into five parts. Part one is introduction which briefly introduces the target and meaning of the translation project. Part two gives the brief introduction of the translation project including writer’s background, contents of the book and the characteristics of the article. Part three explains the process of translation project in three steps as preparation before translation, translation work and check after translation. Part four takes the translation theory of Xu Jun, Gadamer as the guidance, and illustrates examples to analyze three difficult points during the translation work, which are translation of homographic words in Japanese and Chinese, translation of Japanese proper nouns and translation of Japanese long sentences. Part five summarizes translator’s experiences and shortcomings of the translation project in the end, thus to offer reference to the future translation work.
