Transfer is originally a psychological term, but now it is among one of the most popular topics being discussed in the field of inter-language pragmatics. By transfer is meant“the influence resulting from the similarities and differences between the target language and any other language that has been previously (and perhaps imperfectly) acquired. As a process involving the shift of bilingual information, translation process is, in particular, constrained by the phenomenon of negative transfer. Translators may utilize the idiomatic expressions of their native language in the process of translating. The negative transfer of Chinese is very salient in Chinese-English translation in that the two languages bear little in common because of their different systems. In China, Chinese should be concerned in the process of learning English, due to the lack of authentic language environment for English learners. The matter of negative transfer should be concerned in English teaching too. Three-year college students in Chinese college education can not be ignored. The teaching strategies for three-year should be distinguished from those for four-year college students because they make more negative transfer errors in the process of learning English. In this dissertation, the author analyzes errors in Chinese-English translation assignment, test papers and final examination of non-English sophomores, among which 65.8% are from the negative transfer of Chinese. The author also elaborates on the factors in negative transfer, and discusses the teaching strategies in teaching Chinese-English translation.
