Since its publication, the book Battles That Changed History:An Encyclopedia of World Conflict has been warmly welcomed and widely appreciated by readers. Spencer Tucker, the writer of the book, has reviewed the major battles in history, which include from the Battle of Megiddo in 1479 BC to the invasion of Iraq in 2003 and have profound influence on the pattern of the world. Instead of focusing only on the wars, as other books with similar theme do, this book describes in detail the political, economic and military situations of the belligerent states before the outbreak of the wars and analyzes their causes and processes and their far-reaching influence to the belligerent states. The materials from this book include Siege of Troy, Battle of Thermopylae, Siege of Constantinople, Battle of Austerlitz, the Battle of Somme of World War I, Normandy Invasion of World War II, the Third Middle-East War (also known as Six-Day War). In this case, the author discusses the semantic influence on translation strategies from the perspective of semantics, including abstraction of words, specification of words, domestication and foreignization, addition and omission of the semantics, and puts forward suggestions as for the translation strategies under this situation. In the summary, some problems the author encountered during the translation are listed, and the causes of problems are analysed. What’s more, discussions are made on some mistakes and shortcomings in the translation.
