English news reports play an important role in life, for they offer opportunities for people to know about the world news in every aspect timely and objectively. In addition, English news reports not only transmit news to the public, but at the same time indicate news spokesmen/reporters’ attitudes to the news themselves. Accordingly, the public can hold different attitudes to the news, which approve, oppose or challenge news spokesmen/reporters’attitudes. Evidentiality, a semantic concept, widely exists in languages. It not only indicates information sources, but also indicates speakers’ different degrees of commitment to the factual status of information. So far, many researchers have studied dialogism in English news reports and evidentiality respectively from various perspectives. However, few researchers have combined both of them to have an exploration yet. In fact, evidentiality widely exists in English news reports. Therefore, it is necessary to combine dialogism in English news reports with evidentiality together to have a further study.Based on a corpus of 100 English news reports and within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics and Appraisal System, this paper discusses the interpersonal function of evidentiality in realizing dialogism in English news reports, during the process of which both qualitative and quantitative methods are used. The analysis has shown that abundant evidential resources are employed frequently in English news reports, and different evidential types together with different lexicogrammatical realizations help to realize different aspects of dialogism in English news reports, such as dialogic expansion and dialogic contraction. On one hand, the study widens language resources of realizing dialogism in English news reports, and it is also complementary to the study of dialogism in evidential studies; on the other hand, the study findings can raise speakers’awareness of interpersonal function of evidentiality so that they would pay more attention to how to choose evidentiality appropriately in English news reports.
