The activity of translation plays a crucial role in cross-language communication. With the development of science and technology, the science fiction has become more popular and gained a number of fans at modern times. Chinese readers are able to reach Western science fictions more easily by the activity of translation. This is a report on the translation of Rocannon’s World(excerpts), which is a mix of science fiction and fantasy written by Ursula K. Le Guin. The fiction tells an inter-species story: The princess Semley goes in search of her family heirloom——a sapphire necklace. The journey seems to last only for one night, but upon returning home, Semley finds that she has been away for decades. Rocannon, an ethnographer from the League of All Worlds, follows Semley back to her planet, carrying out a research on it and charting the unknown species. He becomes stranded on this technologically primitive planet and his spaceship and all his crew are destroyed.Ursula K. Le Guin is a world-renowned writer in the field of science fictions, and many of her books have been translated into Chinese. Roncannon’s World is one among her classic works which has gained high reputations in Western countries. It is worthwhile to introduce the book to Chinese readers. This report aims to analyze the translation task and discuss the strategies of science fictions. The help of dictionaries and other references enables the translator to understand the source text and proofread the translation smoothly. Under the guidance of relevant translation theories, the analysis of the translation is carried out based on some examples selected from both the original text and the target text. The report indicates that translators should try his best to achieve the equivalence between the source language and the target language instead of translating word-by-word. And the translation should be faithful to the content of the source text as well as satisfying the taste of the target readers.
