Michelangelo Antonioni-- Italian modernism film director, also recognized as one of the most influential film directors in aesthetics. His keen intelligence as well as the unique perspectives provided us with an amplified real world that cannot be easily found. He believed that the film was important for its reality rather than logicality, which therefore led him to pursue an ‘anti-traditional’ way. He began with the new realism and eventually formed his own style-- internal realism.Antonioni’s filming thoughts were deeply influenced by Sutter’s existentialism, whose works are lively and meaningful. Antonioni was therefore called a generation of ‘movie philosopher’. His films focused on the middle class’ s increasingly empty and anxiety caused by industrial civilization. He paid attention to the non-communication phenomenon among people and their suffering.Antonioni’s movie had completely gotten rid of Aristotle’s dramatics. He simplified plots and was against the traditional narrative pattern. He also disintegrated human characters by creating non-typical figures, thus reflected their inner minds. He tried to explore human’s concealed subconscious, therefore deconstructed the nothingness of modern people.Antonioni believed that the film was not limited to the screen, and could even extend to the realistic world. Screen as a medium was connecting Antonioni with the audience. He advocated employing the natural sound to exaggerate the real atmosphere with the synchronous live recording as the background sound effect. Antonioni’s nonlinear-editing-mode scattered the film, turning it to polysemy. Actors, as a part of his film, did not have the function of promoting the plots, but to express themselves. In summary, this paper analyzed Antonioni’s film world thoroughly and provided some implications to the Chinese film industry.
